MADISON, Wis.--()--The TomoTherapy® Hi·Art® cancer treatment system was featured in a presentation on capital equipment acquisition during the Association of Cancer Executives (ACE) annual meeting, Feb. 14-17, 2009, in Sarasota, Fla. The presentation was delivered by Terry McKay, founder and former president of ACE and current president and CEO of the West Michigan Cancer Center (WMCC), Kalamazoo, Mich. Ms. McKay detailed the reasons why WMCC chose the innovative radiation therapy solution developed by TomoTherapy Incorporated (NASDAQ: TOMO), and discussed how the Hi·Art system installation ranks among her 14 career linear accelerator (linac) purchases.
“We are attracting more patients because of TomoTherapy”
“We have developed a very thorough process for all capital equipment acquisition efforts,” said Ms. McKay, “During our recent linac selection process, TomoTherapy emerged as the clear winner. The decision came down to our belief that the Tomo® CT scanner-based platform, which allows for integrated image guidance and helical delivery of radiation therapy, has the greatest potential for enhancing cancer treatment moving forward.”
In the months since acquiring TomoTherapy technology, McKay believes that WMCC’s capabilities have expanded dramatically.
“We are attracting more patients because of TomoTherapy,” said Ms. McKay. “The platform gives us the ability to accurately and successfully re-treat patients who have previously received radiation therapy, and to treat complex cases with a degree of quality that we simply couldn’t get with any other linac. Our referring physicians are beginning to understand this, and our staff has clearly come to expect more with Tomo. The bar is now higher.”
McKay stated that WMCC accepted delivery of the Hi·Art treatment system at the end of August 2008. In less than a month, clinical staff treated their first cancer patient using the device. According to Ms. McKay, “I have installed 13 other linacs in a career that has lasted for more than three decades. The TomoTherapy install was the fastest, easiest and most trouble-free installation I have had yet.”
Fred Robertson, TomoTherapy CEO, said that the company is proud to be associated with Ms. McKay and WMCC. “Terry McKay is a well-regarded leader in the field of cancer center administration. We are pleased to know that she and the West Michigan Cancer Center are highly satisfied with their investment in the TomoTherapy platform, and we are eager to build upon this strong relationship for years to come.”
