“Michelle” is Michelle Duncan, Chief Candle Creator of D-n-D Ranch Aromas and human matriarch of an animal brood of 29 at the D-n-D Ranch in Hanover, outside Colorado Springs. At first, Duncan made candles to satisfy her own scented candle addiction. Most recently an executive assistant at a real estate company, Duncan had to figure out how she was going to keep her large animal family fed after the local market took a dive.

Duncan, who usually has candles burning in every room of her house, perfected her candle-making abilities by testing them on Guzman, who owns the bowling alley where Duncan’s husband is the manager.

More great feedback from family and friends ultimately meant more feed for the ranch, so Duncan gave her All Year-Round scented candle creations fun names after her animals – horses, dogs, cats, pigs, goats, miniature horses, ducks and chickens, most of them rescues. Soon D-n-D Ranch Aromas was born and so was Guzman’s addiction. Duncan has since added themed and seasonal candle lines, which have only made Guzman’s need for long-lasting, fabulous scents stronger.

I buy several at a time so I really don’t think there’s any way to curb this addiction,” Guzman says, smiling. “I don’t see a problem anyway – I tell myself this will be my last visit to the shop this month, I swear. And the very next week I tell myself the same thing. It’s not hurting anyone, right?”
