Recession ushers in the age of the ‘soliday’ say Dialaflight

LONDON--()--A recent survey has revealed what appears to be a new and possibly recession fuelled trend for travelling solo. The poll of 4,000 UK adults found that 15 per cent of holidaymakers travelled alone in the past year. These findings are apparently noteworthy enough for a new term to have been coined, it seems solo travel is now being dubbed a ‘soliday’.

“The growth in singles travel is one of the more noteworthy trends to emerge in the last year and shows that despite difficult financial circumstances making group travel less feasible for many, plenty of individuals are not letting that stand in the way of their travel plans”

It has been speculated that this rise in the number of holidaymakers taking trips alone is at least partly attributable to the recession. The theory goes that keen travellers who aren’t letting the economic situation deter them may find themselves having to go solo because friends and family can’t afford to accompany them.

Commentators have speculated that this is a trend likely to continue, even as the economy starts to recover. With just under a third of the UK’s population now living in single person households and the singles population widely forecast to rise by around thirty percent over the next twenty years it seems the singles demographic is set to become increasingly influential, not least in the travel sector.

The travel industry is already responding to this surge in demand and a wider range of singles-targeted travel packages are now on offer.

A spokesperson for DialAFlight commented: “The growth in singles travel is one of the more noteworthy trends to emerge in the last year and shows that despite difficult financial circumstances making group travel less feasible for many, plenty of individuals are not letting that stand in the way of their travel plans”.
