Samsung Receives 2010 Excellence in ENERGY STAR Promotion Award for Energy Savings and Consumer Education Efforts

EPA Recognizes Consumer Electronics Maker in the Excellence Award Category for 2nd Year in a Row

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.--()--Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a leader in creating the latest innovations in the consumer electronics and telecommunications industries, is earning stripes for its work to improve the environment and will be recognized with the ENERGY STAR Promotion Award for 2010 at an award event in Washington, D.C. later today. Samsung is receiving the award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its outstanding contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by sponsoring significant consumer education efforts promoting energy-efficient products.

“In 2009, Samsung’s new energy efficient designed products have saved more than 7 billion kilowatt hours of energy, and we are honored that these efforts have been recognized by the EPA in the Excellence Awards category and look forward to continuing our ENERGY STAR partnership.”

An ENERGY STAR partner since 1996, Samsung has worked to educate and enable consumers to save energy and recycle, with its suite of ENERGY STAR products, including certified computer monitors that help consumers save an estimated $48 on their annual energy bill, or clothes washers that helped consumers save more than one billion kilowatt hours of energy in 2009, according to internal studies. And through its 50-state recycling program Samsung Recycling DirectSM, which allows consumers to dispose of their consumer electronics products at permanent drop-off centers in the U.S. has recycled more than 18 million pounds of e-waste in just 18 months. Samsung’s new green Web site www.samsung.com/green, also provides visitors with updated green activities and products from Samsung.

“Samsung has always been known for our quality consumer electronics and now we are utilizing our expertise in cutting-edge technology to make our products greener, increasing their energy efficiency, improving the manufacturing and distribution processes behind them, and educating our consumers about the benefits of energy-efficient products,” said JC Ser, VP of Customer Satisfaction Division, Samsung Electronics America, “In 2009, Samsung’s new energy efficient designed products have saved more than 7 billion kilowatt hours of energy, and we are honored that these efforts have been recognized by the EPA in the Excellence Awards category and look forward to continuing our ENERGY STAR partnership.”

Part of Samsung’s efforts to educate consumers about greener products and energy efficiency has been to develop a keen understanding of consumers’ perceptions of corporate sustainability and eco-sensitive products. From a Samsung survey released in January 2010, we found that a full 45 percent of Americans say they’d be a lot more likely to purchase consumer electronics from a company that produces energy efficient products. While 74 percent of consumers feel it is their duty to save the planet for future generations, 60 percent also cite saving money as a leading reason for trying to be more environmentally conscious.

“By creatively promoting ENERGY STAR, partners like Samsung are making it easy for consumers to find energy-efficient products in the marketplace,” said Gina McCarthy, EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation. “Organizations such as Samsung demonstrate their leadership by showing Americans how they can protect our environment through energy efficiency.”

Last year alone Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved nearly $17 billion on their energy bills and reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 30 million vehicles.

The 2010 Excellence in ENERGY STAR Promotion Award is given to a variety of organizations to recognize their efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution, resulting in significant cost savings. Award winners are selected from more than 17,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.
