WALTHAM, Mass.--()--IdentityTruth, the leading provider of a new breed of identity theft monitoring services to help consumers avoid identity theft and safeguard their privacy and identity, today is sharing tips to enable people to protect themselves while at the office. Many people may assume that their employers have systems in place to protect their personal identity in the workplace, but would be surprised at the risks present.
“Most people feel safe at work and think that they’re protected by company firewalls and anti-virus monitoring, but there are various on and offline aspects of office life that leave a person more vulnerable to identity theft”
“Most people feel safe at work and think that they’re protected by company firewalls and anti-virus monitoring, but there are various on and offline aspects of office life that leave a person more vulnerable to identity theft,” said Steven Domenikos, CEO of IdentityTruth. “The more people know, the better able they will be to protect themselves from becoming victims.”
Steven shares his list of tips to protect yourself at the office:
- Copy That: A recent expose by CBS News revealed a startling fact that at least 60% of Americans are unaware of – photocopy machines contain hard drives that automatically store an image of everything copied for the life of the machine! Before your office sells the copier, make sure the hard-drive is wiped – and be sure to copy sensitive documents only on a home copier, whenever possible.
- Got ID: Employee IDs often contain your full name and photo. In some states, a forged employee ID can be used by identity thieves to obtain other forms of ID in your name – even a driver’s license! Always keep your employee ID in a safe and secure place.
- This Time, Its Personnel: If you leave your company, be sure to ask that they shred all materials that contain your sensitive personal information. Request that files that are kept in their records have social security numbers and other sensitive information blackened out, wherever possible.
- Trash Cookies?: This is the one time you’ll actually want to trash cookies! Be sure to remove all personal files from computers before you leave any job. Delete all web browsing history and cookies to ensure stored passwords cannot be used to access personal information.
- Desktop Disaster: Don’t assume that the company firewall will protect you from virus and malware attacks that could enable identity thieves to monitor the keystrokes on your computer and give them passwords to anything you log in to – download the latest anti-virus software yourself, and keep it updated.
-
Better Business Banking: Because they typically contain larger
balances than private accounts, business bank accounts are often the
most vulnerable to identity thieves. They’re also the accounts least
protected by the law. For business owners, it is vital that these
accounts are not accessed via shared and/or unsecure computers, and
that the office wireless connection is encrypted.
Identity theft
is America's fastest-growing crime. More than 70 million identities will be lost this year alone with as many as 4 million social security numbers being stolen. Simple credit monitoring is not enough - only 15% of identity theft is credit-related (85% of identity fraud happens “outside” the credit system). IdentityTruth has discovered suspicious “identity events” for more than 1 out of 4 consumers who subscribe to its service.
IdentityTruth’s unique Faster than Fraud™ technology combines data from many different sources--going beyond simple credit-based protection to deliver a more complete picture of an individual’s identity risk.
The service continuously combines and analyzes any and all information that is discovered specific to an individual to detect suspicious activities, report possible fraud before it happens and provide concrete next-steps to resolve a problem that may arise.
