Columbia Asia Opens Hospital in Nusajaya

Facility Will Boost South Malaysia Economic Development

SEATTLE--()--Columbia Asia, a fast-growing hospital company with Pacific Northwest roots, is now part of a major new development in Nusajaya, Malaysia – a mere 10-minute drive from the bustling country of Singapore.

“We are focused on providing the healthcare of the future rather than the past, with the most advanced medical treatment and efficient facilities, so it is appropriate that we take part in such an important step in the country’s growth.”

The new 82-bed hospital is the first medical facility built in Nusajaya, a city that the government and private developers began building in South Malaysia just a few years ago and is projected to grow to 500,000 people in the next decade.

“The growth in Malaysia is astounding,” said Rahani Yaacob, General Manager of Columbia Asia Hospital – Nusajaya. “Nusajaya has gone from undeveloped countryside to a sophisticated city practically overnight. Columbia Asia is proud to be here from the beginning, providing quality, patient-focused medical care.”

The $22 million facility is Columbia Asia’s seventh hospital in Malaysia. The company, part of Seattle-based Columbia Pacific, built its first hospital in Seremban in 1999 and also has hospitals in Miri and Bintulu in East Malaysia; Taiping in West Malaysia and Puchong and Shah Alam in the Kuala Lumpur area.

The company’s new hospital in Nusajaya offers a full range of primary and secondary services, including inpatient and outpatient care, a 24-hour emergency room, operating theater, day surgery and physiotherapy. The hospital is expecting strong business, among other specialties, in its obstetric and pediatric departments, as well as knee replacements.

The hospital is the first facility built in what will be a 67-acre medical park and healthcare hub for the fast-growing South Malaysia region and will also serve Singaporeans living in Malaysia and perhaps, in time, the Singapore market directly.

The city of Nusajaya will be the new administrative capital for Malaysia’s Johor state and is part of a much larger 378-square-mile development region called Iskandar Malaysia, one of the country’s most ambitious development projects and a key access point to the Singapore and Indonesia markets.

“Columbia Asia is excited to be at the forefront of a critical development for the Malaysian economy,” said Kelvin Tan, CEO of Columbia Asia in Malaysia. “We are focused on providing the healthcare of the future rather than the past, with the most advanced medical treatment and efficient facilities, so it is appropriate that we take part in such an important step in the country’s growth.”
