BOSTON--()--Boston Software Systems® is proud to announce its 25th anniversary. During this time, the company has maintained a laser-like focus on providing automation and integration technology that allows healthcare organizations of every size to automate common tasks, manage workflow and improve productivity. It remains the only automation technology in the healthcare market that can integrate any application that runs on a PC.
“The primary market drivers haven’t changed – hospitals have disparate systems and different data within those systems. There has, and will always be, a need to bridge the gap between those systems and customize that integration to fit each organization’s unique workflow processes.”
Hospitals around the world use Boston Software Systems’ solutions for hundreds of tasks throughout their organizations, such as: revenue cycle management, process development, materials management, claims management, automated data entry, report generation, payment posting, eligibility checking and downtime backup. As a result of their using Boston Software Systems’ technologies, healthcare organizations have saved hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars.
Commenting on the changes in the industry over the past two plus decades, company President Sara McNeil said, “The primary market drivers haven’t changed – hospitals have disparate systems and different data within those systems. There has, and will always be, a need to bridge the gap between those systems and customize that integration to fit each organization’s unique workflow processes.”
Boston Software Systems is a rare breed among technology companies. The firm’s founders, Sara and Rich McNeil, are still actively involved, with Sara serving as the president and Rich serving as the technology visionary. In addition, the company has never received outside funding and has always grown organically through its own revenue generation.
In 1986, Rich developed a practice management system for physicians and almost immediately recognized the need for integrating that system to hospitals. Wanting to provide a tool that would allow users to develop and manage their own interfaces, he developed Boston WorkStation™. Initially selling and supporting customers in the immediate New England area, the McNeils licensed their scripting software to MicroScript Corp. for greater marketing resources while they continued to work for 15 years as the R&D department.
After MicroScript was purchased by New Era of Networks, Sara and Rich revitalized the product, took control of its marketing and reorganized Boston Software Systems. Wanting to concentrate on customer satisfaction and product development rather than office management, the McNeils opted to keep the organization virtual – a strategy that continues to be successful. The virtual model not only reduces operating costs, but it also allows the company to hire the best people regardless of where they are located.
As technology innovation continues, Boston Software Systems consistently advances its technology to meet customers’ needs. “In the future we see ourselves doing more in the cloud and providing control over the internet,” said McNeil. “We also see a need to provide more performance information back to management about staff’s enhanced productivity using automation.”
Boston Software Systems’ flagship automation product, Boston WorkStation ®, is the standard development tool used in hospitals throughout the world to automate, organize and expedite the flow of data. Earlier this year, the company announced Cognauto™ for intuitive, content-aware automation development. UNISON automates the synchronization of tests and live dictionaries in the MEDITECH environment.
“Healthcare organizations have changed in one regard: the demands of the staff have increased exponentially, and they must be able to do more with fewer resources,” added McNeil. “It would have been easy to delve into other industries, but our core expertise is in healthcare. We intend to remain in this dynamic and complex market because this is where our expertise is and automation technology fills a critical void.”
