SAN JOSE, Calif.--()--As Green Technology Solutions’ (OTCBB: GTSO) mining subsidiary GTSO Resources continues its efforts to explore and develop resources in the urban mining sector, industry experts gave the company some highly encouraging news last week.
“Global Opportunities in the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Recycling Services Market”
According to a new report by the analysts Frost & Sullivan titled "Global Opportunities in the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Recycling Services Market,” the global e-waste recycling (or urban mining) market was estimated to be worth $1.42 billion in 2011. Even better, the report predicts that the market will grow to $1.86 billion by 2017 with a strong compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of four percent.
That CAGR makes urban mining one of the fastest-growing sectors by volume within the global waste industry. Thanks to legislation, Europe is currently a world leader in urban mining. The E.U.’s WEEE Directive requires all member countries to recover 45 tonnes of e-waste for every 100 tonnes of e-goods sold by 2016, with the recovery target increasing to 65 percent of sales by 2019 or 85 percent of all waste generated.
GTSO believe that an even bigger growth opportunity exists in the world’s developing economies, where much of the world’s e-waste is currently dumped. In addition to its traditional mining initiatives across the globe, GTSO Resources is exploring new urban mining opportunities in nations such as Ghana and Chile as it seeks to acquire or partner with emerging developers of e-waste recycling methods and infrastructure.
Urban mining is a major pillar of GTSO’s plans to compete alongside major international corporations striving for sustainable manufacturing solutions, such as Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) and Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE: TM). The company is also exploring traditional mining opportunities in the U.S. and Africa through its joint venture with Diamond V Associates.
