OKLAHOMA CITY--()--The term “mobile app” is taking on a revolutionary new meaning as iPhone and iPad apps and a game-changing new prosthetic device give people who have lost limbs mobility options they could only have imagined.
“We are living in a connected, digital world”
Orthocare Innovations (orthocareinnovations.com), a developer of advanced orthotic and prosthetic devices based in Oklahoma City, will officially unveil to the public its new Magellan microprocessor foot ankle system prosthetic device at the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association National Assembly to be held this week in Boston. Magellan, currently in clinical testing, is scheduled for commercial launch in the fourth quarter of this year.
Magellan brings a novel approach to lower limb prosthetics by mimicking key features of the human ankle that are essential to normal gait. The human ankle instantly changes from supple to firm and from flexible to powerful while walking or running. Magellan offers active ankle function using microprocessor computer control, combined with advanced, micro-hydraulic technology, providing persons who have lost limbs with enhanced efficiency, stability and comfort.
Another innovative feature is Magellan’s connectivity, linking the device to its user and the user’s health care providers. This functionality, afforded by iPhone and iPad apps and Bluetooth technology, enables patients to make adjustments to the Magellan themselves, such as adaptations to account for changes in footwear. This functionality also extends to health care providers, affording access to patient performance and device diagnostics.
“We are living in a connected, digital world,” commented Orthocare Innovations’ CEO and Co-Founder Doug McCormack. “Magellan is breaking new ground by incorporating mobile communications technology in prosthetics to improve patient function. The pre-launch interest in Magellan has been overwhelming. We are very excited by the potential to provide persons with limb loss enhanced control of their prosthetic limbs, resulting in greater comfort and performance.”
Orthocare Innovations will be showcasing its Magellan microprocessor foot ankle system at AOPA at booth #625 located on Level 2, Exhibit Hall C during the National Assembly at Hynes Convention Center in Boston.
