First Annual Bug Light 5k Run/Walk to Support Community Park, Trail and Historical Preservation Projects

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine to serve as presenting sponsor

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine--()--The South Portland Land Trust (SPLT), the South Portland Historical Society and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine have partnered to create the 1st Annual Bug Light 5K Run/Walk, set for Sunday, October 7th at 9:00 a.m. Proceeds from the event will be used to support park, trail and historical preservation projects throughout the City of South Portland.

“A major part of our daily mission is to support a healthier Maine”

Participants of all abilities—from competitive runners to recreational walkers—are invited to enjoy the professionally certified, scenic 5k run or walk. The course begins in Bug Light Park and goes along the Spring Point Shoreway through the historic Willard Neighborhood to Willard Square before ending back at the Park via the Greenbelt Walkway. The course can be viewed on the race's website: www.buglight5k.com.

"The South Portland Land Trust, South Portland Historical Society, and Anthem are organizing the race in support of city's parks, trails and historically significant places,” said SPLT Program Manager Joe Dore. “We believe that the race will grow steadily in the years to come and, as it grows, it will continue to draw attention to our wonderful City and support the local economy.”

The race organizers are crediting Anthem and other local sponsors with stepping up in a big way in support of the inaugural event. The CG Group Portland Division Naval Sea Cadets are generously providing most of the event’s volunteers.

“A major part of our daily mission is to support a healthier Maine,” said Dan Corcoran, Anthem’s president and general manager. “Not only does this event provide the platform for healthy activities, the proceeds help support trail improvements that benefit the whole community.”

Dore added that the Bug Light 5K highlights how park and trail projects promote exercise. “This is a great partnership with Anthem and we’re thrilled to have them aboard.”
