COLUMBUS, Ohio--()--Momentive Specialty Chemicals, a premier global supplier of epoxy resins and curing agents for automotive applications, will showcase an epoxy system that hastens mass production of carbon-fiber composites with a Class-A finish. The system will be on display at the ACCE 2012 Composites Show, September 11–13 in Troy, Michigan.
“This new resin system is specifically suitable for gap impregnation RTM processing, and the excellent surface quality is the result of very low shrinkage during curing, combined with a higher glass transition temperature, which prevent damage during the de-molding step”
Based on EPIKOTE™ Resin 04695-1 and EPIKURE™ Curing Agent 05490A, this new generation epoxy system from Momentive imparts a superior Class-A finish to carbon-reinforced composite components for exterior parts.
“This new resin system is specifically suitable for gap impregnation RTM processing, and the excellent surface quality is the result of very low shrinkage during curing, combined with a higher glass transition temperature, which prevent damage during the de-molding step,” says Dr. Tareq Hasson, R&D Manager Composites. “This system cures in less than 15 minutes at 90°C with gap RTM, and can also be used with standard RTM processes. It expands our portfolio for Automotive Class-A composites, which now includes a higher Tg, faster curing alternative to the widely used EPIKOTE Resin 04695-1 / EPIKURE Curing Agent 05357 system.”
In gap impregnation RTM, developed by the IKV lnstitute of Plastics Processing (Aachen, Germany), a preform is inserted into a special mold, then impregnated with a liquid resin, and finally cured. In contrast with standard RTM, the impregnation is carried out very rapidly through the creation of a temporary flow gap. The impregnated preforms are then compressed.
This process offers great potential for automated, large-series production with reduced process cycle times. Results of a benchmarking study illustrating this resin’s superior surface performance are published online in English at www.kunststoffe-international.com and in German at www.kunstoffe.de.
