SAN FRANCISCO--()--San Francisco Academy Orchestra Music Director, Andrei Gorbatenko, announced the orchestra’s 2012-2013 season today, which will open on October 7th with Mozart’s Symphony in A Major, K134 and the world premiere of Zingara, a ballet suite written by award winning pianist and composer Audrey Vardanega. The ballet, with a 19th century gypsy-style libretto, explores the mind of an entitled girl and her moral dilemma on where she stands in society. The music is set to music that employs compositional techniques of both the 20th and 21st centuries. “Learning Vardanega’s music has been quite enlightening,” says Gorbatenko. “Just when I thought I was catching a glimpse into the future of music, I realized that this future is now.”
“Just when I thought I was catching a glimpse into the future of music, I realized that this future is now.”
The season will also include the 4th annual Sing-it-Yourself Messiah, a benefit concert for the San Francisco Food Bank, and a season finale which will include Schubert’s Symphony no. 5 as well as Dittersdorf’s rarely performed Sinfonia Concertante for viola and double bass, featuring venerable violist Don Ehrlich and San Francisco Symphony Principal Bassist, Scott Pingel.
The latest addition to Academy Live, an HD audio/video series featuring select San Francisco Academy Orchestra performances, contrasts early and late Mozart symphonies. Available at no cost for streaming on the orchestra’s website, Academy Live, provides a way for music enthusiasts to watch, listen, and share Academy Orchestra performances worldwide.
