Worldwide Purpose-Built Backup Appliance (PBBA) Market Experiences Strong Growth in Second Quarter of 2012, According to IDC

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Worldwide PBBA factory revenues posted year-over-year growth of 29.8%, totaling just under $657.4 million, in the second quarter of 2012 (2Q12), according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Purpose-Built Backup Appliance Tracker. For the quarter, the total PBBA open systems market posted just under $551.1 million in revenues, representing 27.7% growth from the prior year's second quarter. The total worldwide PBBA capacity shipped reach 273,082 terabytes, growing 32.2% year over year.

EMC maintained its lead in the overall PBBA market with 62.2% revenue share in the second quarter, followed by IBM and Symantec with 13.5% and 7.9% market share, respectively. IBM had a good quarter with its mainframe PBBA offerings. Symantec exhibited strong growth in the open system PBBA market with its NetBackup appliances, which entered the PBBA market in 2010. Meanwhile, HP captured 5.9% share with its new PBBA product offerings coupled with its StorOnce deduplication and optimization software tools.
