RBS Citizens CEO Ellen Alemany recognized by American Banker as one of "The 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking"

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ellen Alemany, Chairman and CEO of RBS Citizens Financial Group, Inc. and Head of RBS Americas, has been recognized by American Banker as the fourth most powerful banker on this year's list of "The 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking." She ranked No. 5 on its 2011 list. American Banker also this year recognized a team of women executives as one of six “Top Teams In Banking.”

The editors noted RBS Citizens’ strong business performance, crediting Alemany with achievements including positive financial results, strong customer relationships, and expanded commercial banking capabilities.

“Having swung back to two years of profitability after a money-losing 2009, the company, led by CEO Ellen Alemany, has put new emphasis on steering women up through the management ranks,” the editors wrote, noting that both RBS Citizens’ Executive Committee and its Board of Directors include several female members.

This is the first year for RBS Citizens’ broader team of women executives to be recognized as a “Top Team In Banking.” In recognizing the team, American Banker editors noted that “commitment to women is part of the heritage of RBS Citizens” dating back to the Women’s Savings and Loan Co. of Cleveland, which in 1922 became one of the first U.S. banks started and operated by women. Among other present-day accomplishments, the editors noted that Alemany’s executive team now includes women at the head of strategically important departments including Risk Management, Business and Retail Banking and Communications & Marketing.

As Chairman of the 10-member Board of Directors of RBS Citizens Financial Group, Alemany leads the senior-most corporate governance body of the company. As CEO, she leads the bank, its vision and mission, strategic direction, execution, brand and more than 18,000 Citizens colleagues across the company’s footprint.

Alemany also is a member of the boards of directors of The Financial Services Roundtable and The Clearing House Payments Company. From 2008 through 2010, she was the First District Representative on the Federal Advisory Council, directly consulting with and advising the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

An active member of the community, Alemany serves on the board of the Center for Discovery, which honored her in May for her leadership and her long record of community involvement. She also is a member of the board of trustees of the National Constitution Center and a member of the Providence College Business Advisory Council. In 2011, the Foreign Policy Association honored her with its Corporate Social Responsibility Award.
