UC Irvine School of Law to Host Public Interest Lecture on Excessive Punishment Oct. 16

IRVINE, Calif.--()--A nationally known expert on prisoners and punishment will deliver the annual Al Meyerhoff Public Interest Lecture at UC Irvine School of Law on Oct. 16.

“Confronting Mass Incarceration and Excessive Punishment in America.”

WHAT:

 

Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative and professor at New York University School of Law, will lecture on "Confronting Mass Incarceration and Excessive Punishment in America."

 

WHO:

Stevenson is a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer who has dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned. Equal Justice Initiative is a nonprofit organization providing legal representation to condemned prisoners, juvenile offenders, people wrongly convicted or charged, poor people denied effective representation and others whose trials are marked by racial bias or prosecutorial misconduct.

 
The annual Meyerhoff lecture series commemorates the esteemed life and public service of the late Al Meyerhoff, a renowned labor, environmental and civil rights lawyer who brought a landmark case to stop sweatshop conditions for 30,000 workers on the Pacific island of Saipan.

The lecture will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 4:30 to 5:30 pm, with reception to follow.
