Company Responds to 60 Minutes Story Lamenting Disappearance of U.S. Telecom Manufacturers

In a letter to 60 Minutes producers and the Chairman of CBS News, Tecore Networks’ CEO Jay Salkini made clear that as the longstanding standard-bearer of investigative journalism, the piece run by 60 Minutes was a tremendous oversight to both Tecore Networks and wireless operators by failing to acknowledge that his company vigorously continues as the last U.S.-owned manufacturer in the wireless equipment sector, especially in light of the fact 60 Minutes producers were aware of Tecore Networks’ presence in the market space. Tecore Networks “has worked very hard over the years to not only continue to exist, but to grow and ensure that network operators, the U.S. government, and foreign governments are aware that at least one American alternative remains viable and available,” Mr. Salkini said. 60 Minutes and CBS News, he proposed, should run a post-script to the Huawei story “to point out that although the U.S. manufacturing base in this sector has nearly vanished, Tecore Networks remains to compete with quality, American made Telecom equipment.”

The 60 Minutes story, which aired October 7, 2012, on CBS television, discussed Huawei Technologies and the potential threat that the company’s incursion into the U.S. telecom market poses to U.S. national security, especially in light of the apparent close ties maintained with the Chinese government and military by the purportedly independent company. Mr. Salkini otherwise praised CBS for the story as “a good piece that highlighted the risks of this equipment in the U.S. market.”
