DENVER--()--Rep. Scott Tipton, from Colorado’s 3rd District in the U.S. House of Representatives, visited Westwood College on Monday, Oct. 1 as part of his statewide tour of businesses, institutions of higher education and community organizations. Rep. Tipton’s visit to Westwood was intended to help him gain a better understanding of the hands-on education Westwood provides its students.
“Westwood is educating students in a very practical way and I applaud what they are doing.”
“This type of education plays a critical role in people having the skill sets necessary to get a job,” said Rep. Tipton. “Westwood is educating students in a very practical way and I applaud what they are doing.”
During his visit, Rep. Tipton toured Westwood’s Denver North Campus and sat in on a Cisco Networking Academy class as well as a Rube Goldberg competition during which students were tasked with making a complex machine to perform a simple task. Rep. Tipton, who serves on the House Committee for Small Business, also met with representatives from companies that have hired Westwood graduates as well as with Westwood leadership to learn how a proprietary, career college differs from more traditional state-funded institutions.
“Over the past three years, our institution has made sweeping changes to improve the experience and success of our students, from the time they first inquire about what Westwood offers to the on-campus or online support they receive through graduation and entry into the workforce,” said Dean Gouin, chief executive officer and system president of Westwood College. “We were honored to show Rep. Tipton how we can effectively serve a nontraditional student body that includes many who have tried and determined that community colleges or traditional universities are not the right fit for them, work full-time and often are older and have children at home.”
