Facebook Activation Helps Fight World Hunger One Share at a Time

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Colonel Harland Sanders’ secret recipe to a well-lived life included giving back to the community and helping those in need. This year, KFC® will again honor the Colonel’s legacy by raising money to feed the hungry through KFC’s Recipe for Hope, a part of Yum! Brands’ annual World Hunger Relief campaign.

KFC is calling on fans to “Pass the Bucket” on Facebook this month, to raise awareness and funds for World Hunger Relief. The brand has more than five million Likes on its U.S. Facebook page (www.facebook.com/KFC), so there are plenty of potential recruits for the Colonel’s fundraising army. KFC will donate $1 to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) for each of the first 10,000 fans who “Pass the Bucket” by sharing KFC’s Recipe for Hope image on their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/KFC), up to a maximum donation of $10,000.

Even a single “share” is meaningful, given that for approximately $1 a day, WFP can provide a meal to four children through its global school meals program.

“Since KFC U.S. began its World Hunger Relief effort five years ago, the brand has raised nearly $7 million to help feed the hungry,” said John Cywinski, President of KFC U.S. “This year’s ‘Pass the Bucket’ Facebook campaign makes it easy for our social media followers to help fight hunger simply by clicking ‘Share.’ We think the Colonel would be very proud of our ‘Recipe for Hope.’”

Colonel Sanders’ commitment to helping others was legendary. Many of the people who knew him said that he gave away much of his fortune in order to help others. A quote from the Colonel’s recently discovered autobiography perfectly illustrated his philanthropic nature: “There’s something inside of me that makes me want to help people, especially people who are having difficulty of some kind,” the Colonel wrote.

In addition to “Passing the Bucket” to trigger a donation, consumers can also make a donation at participating KFC restaurants through Nov. 18. No purchase is necessary. KFC restaurant employees have embraced the World Hunger Relief program, executing creative local fund-raising campaigns that have seen some restaurants raise as much as $13,000 in a single year.

Since 2007, KFC has supported Yum! Brands’ nationally-recognized annual World Hunger Relief campaign, which raises awareness, volunteerism and funds for WFP and other hunger relief agencies. In October, David Novak, Chairman and CEO of Yum! Brands, was recognized by World Food Program USA with the 11^th annual George McGovern Leadership Award at the State Department for the company’s World Hunger Relief effort. To date, Yum!
