SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(Simply Hired®, the world’s most comprehensive job site, today reported that for the fifth time in six months the U.S. has experienced growth in job openings. In October, job openings increased 4.1 percent month-over-month and 8.0 percent year-over-year. Nationwide job competition held steady at a ratio of three unemployed persons for every one job opening. These findings are part of Simply Hired’s November 2012 Employment Outlook, which highlights job industry and employer trends in national and regional U.S. markets.)--

Hiring increases in all major metro areas
Job openings increased in all 50 of the major metros. Salt Lake City (8.8 percent) and Miami & Fort Lauderdale (7.8 percent) had the largest gains in October. In addition, the ratio of job openings to job seekers improved in one-third of all major metros, including New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Houston.
Job openings increase in majority of all industries
Job openings increased in almost three-quarters (72.2 percent) of industries in October. The largest gains were seen in the automotive (13.0 percent) and transportation (10.1 percent) industries. Decreases were seen in five industries, including government (-25.0 percent) and non-profit (-15.7 percent). Year-over-year, nearly 75 percent of industries are experiencing job opening growth.
Law enforcement, fire & safety and retail salesperson jobs increase
More than 80 percent of all occupation categories (15 out of 18) experienced growth in job openings. However, law enforcement, fire & safety (14.4 percent) experienced the largest amount of growth and retail salespersons (10.2 percent) followed close behind due to continued seasonal hiring. In contrast, military personnel (-5.6 percent) experienced the largest decline month-over-month.
