HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--()--At today’s DAM LA conference, digital asset management (DAM) professionals got an insiders’ early look at a new technology that lets them browse assets of any kind in a remote library, drag one out, and drop it into the layout of an Adobe InDesign document.
“This technology is totally consistent with our mission to set the highest standard for the industry; save our customers’ time, money, and creative sanity; and be the best in the world at making digital assets manageable,“ said Bright.”
This capability is a milestone in the evolution of DAM technology. When assets in a non-local DAM behave as if they’re stored on the user’s local computer and can be dragged from a browsing tool directly into a document’s design area, the efficiency of certain search, storage, and other asset-handling tasks is significantly improved.
The demonstration was conducted by Jason Bright, founder and CEO of MediaBeacon, who joined forces earlier this year with Max Dunn, co-founder and CEO of Silicon Publishing, to bring Silicon Publishing’s innovation to market.
MediaBeacon has been a pioneer in the DAM industry for over 20 years. Remote-asset drag-and-drop capability is the latest addition to the company’s existing suite of DAM products and services.
“This technology is totally consistent with our mission to set the highest standard for the industry; save our customers’ time, money, and creative sanity; and be the best in the world at making digital assets manageable,“ said Bright.
With the addition of remote-asset linking capability, MediaBeacon's customers can:
- access millions of non-local assets of any type and size
- browse for, insert, update, store, and manage these non-local assets
- automatically validate assets in use
- maintain assets and asset consistency across every use
- enjoy improved collaboration, storage, organization, asset consistency, and speed
The Remote-Asset Management Technology
The Silicon Connector technology is an Adobe InDesign extension that has been integrated into the latest version of MediaBeacon. It’s an HTTP-based linking system that extends a document designer’s local asset database to resources stored on a DAM “in the cloud.” Once inserted locally, the remote asset can be easily moved, resized, and manipulated as if it were stored locally. There is no need to re-link or move assets around the file system because true HTTP-links point to a single location in the MediaBeacon DAM.
Dunn described Silicon Connector as “a step forward in taking DTP beyond the desktop and into the cloud,” and advised attendees to “look for more capabilities with cloud- and SaaS-based publishing in the next two years as Silicon Publishing rolls out more connectivity, online editing, and batch-composition features in our products.”
In addition to Silicon Connector, Silicon Publishing also invented Silicon Designer, the leading industry-scale online editing platform, and Silicon Paginator, the world’s most advanced engine for automating large, complex, high-quality multi-channel publishing projects.
The Adobe InDesign templates used in Silicon Paginator and Silicon Designer can be stored in a MediaBeacon DAM and directly access MediaBeacon assets over HTTP through Silicon Connector.
Silicon Publishing is also the leading expert in Adobe InDesign Server, and Silicon Connector was designed to work the same way with desktop and server so assets never have to be moved around or re-linked.
