SAN DIEGO--()--Norman AS, the global leader in threat discovery, malware forensics and analysis, and industrial control system (ICS) protection solutions, presents “Five Steps to Securing Critical Infrastructure.” In this episode of the cyber security awareness video series, “Inside Network Security,” Joe Weiss, a managing partner of Applied Control Solutions, delineates a comprehensive cyber security plan for IT management teams to activate within industrial control system operations.
“As Weiss accurately suggests, engineering teams do not easily agree to security policy implementation because unlike their own operational goals, security’s success is not easily quantifiable”
In the wake of a recent increase in devastating malware attacks on high-profile critical infrastructure plants, the need for network protection has piqued the interest of industry officials. But many management teams have yet to implement security policies. Weiss discusses this unfortunate situation, and diagrams a plan to combat poor network security.
He asserts that first, senior management must prioritize security by allocating resources throughout a system’s lifecycle. Second, they should take inventory of all equipment to identify cyber-vulnerable technology. The third step is to conduct a risk assessment to determine the level of security assigned to each piece of equipment, guarding accordingly. To emphasize the importance of network protection, management should then define, enact and explain security policies to their operations teams. Finally, all security technology must be benign to operations and positively contribute to the systems’ productivity and safety goals.
“As Weiss accurately suggests, engineering teams do not easily agree to security policy implementation because unlike their own operational goals, security’s success is not easily quantifiable,” said video series host and Norman AS General Manager, North America, Darin Andersen. “Industrial control system management can ensure maximum availability with Weiss’ actionable insights.”
