ATLANTA--()--The Weather Channel application on smartphones and tablets has now been downloaded by consumers more than 100 million times. The popular app remains the No. 1 weather app, as well as one of the top overall apps on mobile and tablet devices such as iPhone, iPad, Android and more. The 100-million milestone is attributed to the company’s continued development efforts, innovations and response to severe weather throughout 2012.
“Reaching this milestone is a testament not only to our amazing users who continue to seek out – and use – The Weather Channel on their devices, but also to our hard-working team, which continues its efforts to create the best app available on every screen.”
“This is a huge achievement for us – only a very small, select number of companies can say they have this reach and consumer loyalty – and I want to thank our users and our employees,” said Cameron Clayton, digital division president, The Weather Company. “Reaching this milestone is a testament not only to our amazing users who continue to seek out – and use – The Weather Channel on their devices, but also to our hard-working team, which continues its efforts to create the best app available on every screen.”
A mobile leader, The Weather Channel has been available on mobile since 1999, launching applications in 2007 on iOS and in 2008 on Android as smartphones were introduced and available. 2012 saw a complete redesign of The Weather Channel App for iPhone and iPod touch in May, optimizing The Weather Channel App for iPad for iOS 6 in September, launching The Weather Channel App for Windows Phone on Nokia Lumia in July, and adding support for up to 40 languages across all major smart phone apps in July.
This continued innovation has ensured that consumers not only continue to download The Weather Channel app in record numbers, but also use it on a regular basis, with a monthly average of 38 million users on mobile and six million users on tablet. Hurricane Sandy brought record traffic days to The Weather Channel mobile and tablets apps, only to be beaten during the 2012 holidays, when consumers received new devices and experienced a Christmas day with a lot of winter weather. Mobile and tablet apps saw a No. 1 day record Dec. 26 with 137.5 million page views and a No. 2 day record Dec. 25 with 132.4 million page views.
An increase in downloads was also seen during notable 2012 weather events, such as an unseasonably warm “winter-less” winter, a series of early-onset and continued deadly tornado outbreaks, months of record heat, a historic drought, widespread wildfires, Hurricane Isaac in August and Hurricane Sandy in October.
The Weather Channel mobile and tablet apps continue to be the best resources during severe weather, as consumers continue to choose TWC as the best source of information during these times. This monumental milestone solidifies The Weather Company as a top digital company with an unparalleled audience size.
