The year-round initiative will include a series of major events, special multimedia stories, and partnerships with some of New York’s finest institutions. The celebration will highlight El Diario/La Prensa’s legacy as a New York institution, and show the impact of Latinos on the cultural, social and political life of the Big Apple and beyond.

Details revealed today for El Diario/La Prensa’s Centennial include:
- Centennial Logo: A new logo inspired by the New York City skyline, the City’s global status as “The Big Apple,” and El Diario/La Prensa’s iconic font and colors, will appear in all print and digital portals of the newspaper throughout 2013.
- Centennial Preview Supplement (March 2013) featuring a bilingual (English and Spanish) commemorative column by Pulitzer-Prize winning author Oscar Hijuelos (The Mambo Kings, A Simple Habana Melody, Thoughts Without Cigarettes: A Memoir, among others), reflecting on the impact of El Diario/La Prensa.
- Centennial Website (launches April 2013): A full website dedicated to El Diario/La Prensa’s 100th Anniversary will feature special interviews, multimedia stories, photo galleries, timelines, slideshows, event listings, unique promotions, and interactive tools for users to submit their own anecdotes about El Diario/La Prensa.
- Major Special Events and Community Partnerships: El Diario/La Prensa’s 100th birthday is on October 12, 2013, which coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month. But the celebration starts six months earlier with a rotating calendar of educational, community, cultural, artistic, and historical events citywide. Participating organizations include the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, Hostos Community College, the Center for Community and Ethnic Media at the CUNY School of Graduate Journalism, the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center at New York University, the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Columbia University, the Hispanic Federation, StoryCorps, and the New York City High School Journalism Collective, among many others.
- A teacher’s curriculum – Latino Social Justice in New York (1913-2013): A learning tool developed in partnership with the City University of New York that taps stories published in El Diario/La Prensa. The curriculum engages young people on issues such as immigration, workers’ rights, health, housing, education, and media narratives.
- Centennial Photo Exhibit (fall-winter 2013) at the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center at New York University, displaying photographs, front pages, and other historic materials from El Diario/La Prensa’s archives.
- Weekly Centennial Coverage from April through October: Using exclusive materials from El Diario/La Prensa’s century-old archives, housed at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, El Diario/La Prensa will run weekly features, profiles and photo spreads that highlight key moments and experiences for the NY Metro area Latino community and look at their relevance today.
