INDIANAPOLIS--()--Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s national movement. It was created by women, for women with the expressed goal of uncovering the truth about women and heart disease and conveying that information to the women of America.
“When you hear the statistics, they’re quite staggering”
Beyond raising money for research making information available to women, the program seeks to change the way women live so they can reduce heart risk.
Women who have been made aware of Go Red and availed themselves of AHA resources have been moved to action with dramatic results:
- More than 33 percent have lost weight
- Nearly 50 percent have increased their exercise
- 60 percent have changed their diets
- More than 40 percent have checked their cholesterol levels
- 33 percent have talked with their doctors about developing healthy heart plans
“When you hear the statistics, they’re quite staggering,” said Bob Schottenstein, M/I Homes chairman and CEO. “Heart disease is the number one killer of women over the age of 20 and currently 8,000,000 women in the U.S. are living with heart disease. That said, only one in six women say they believe that heart disease is their greatest health risk. We had to do something to help change that figure.”
As one of America's preeminent home builders, M/I Homes will be using its national reach to make a difference.
M/I Homes is donating $100 to the AHA for every home sold nationally during February, March and April of 2013.
In addition, M/I is asking its homeowners to participate in the “A Picture and a Promise” campaign. Homeowners are asked to sign a heart healthy pledge and take pictures of themselves holding it in the yard of their M/I home, then to post it on their personal Facebook page to raise awareness among their friends.
Also when any M/I homebuyer donates $25 to the Go Red for Women program, M/I will give them an additional bonus options allowance.
“This is the greatest threat to women in America with the least amount of awareness. We’re happy to do our part to raise awareness.”
