BERWYN, Pa.--(Styron, the global materials company and manufacturer of plastics, latex and rubber, is introducing several new resins for medical equipment enclosures at MD&M West, February 12 – 14, Anaheim, Calif. These materials complement Styron’s portfolio for enclosures providing resins that result in an economical system cost.)--
“The medical industry constantly faces equipment design challenges”
- EMERGE™ PC/ABS 7700 Advance Resins: PC/ABS blend provides a well-balanced, cost-effective solution for powered medical devices offering ignition resistance and color stability over time.
- MAGNUM™ 2642 MED and MAGNUM™ 8391 MED ABS Resins: Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, manufactured in a continuous mass production process that offers superior lot-to-lot consistency, exceptional natural resin whiteness, and excellent processing characteristics.
Styron is also introducing a broad range of ISO 10993-tested colorants for its CALIBRE™ Polycarbonate Resins, CALIBRE™ MEGARAD™ Polycarbonate Resins, and MAGNUM™ ABS Resins portfolio. With this, documentation is available indicating a growing palette of biocompatible resins.
EMERGE™ PC/ABS 7700 Advanced Resins
When selecting materials for medical equipment housings, manufacturers and molders need to consider a number of properties include durability, appearance and processing. Balancing these properties is essential and results in equipment that maintains its integrity. These materials are available in custom pre-colored solutions.
Styron developed EMERGE™ PC/ABS 7700 Advanced Resins with durability, toughness, non-halogenated ignition resistance, and UV stability. These properties result in equipment housings that maintain their integrity and appearance over time.
The material has a UL flammability rating of V-0 at 1.5mm and is ideal for powered medical equipment. It complements Styron’s EMERGE™ 7600 Advanced Resins and its EMERGE™ 9000 series of chemical resistant materials enabling customers to select the most appropriate resin for specific components of an application and control system costs.
MAGNUM™ 2642 MED and 8391 MED ABS Resins
As the demand for attractive medical equipment grows, manufacturers and molders need materials that provide pleasing aesthetics and advanced performance. Recognized as superior, Styron’s MAGNUM™ ABS Resins have been relied on for decades.
The resins are manufactured with continuous mass polymerization technology. This ensures lot-to-lot consistency of properties including color, rheology and physical structure. Mass polymerization also allows for lower levels of process additives resulting in a purer polymer compared to emulsion ABS resins. This high purity results in superior natural resin whiteness and improved thermal stability.
Both MAGNUM™ 2642 MED and MAGNUM™ 8391 MED ABS Resins offer exceptional appearance due to mass production. MAGNUM™ 8391 MED ABS Resins target premium applications with improved processability and toughness such as higher melt flow, higher impact strength and higher gloss. MAGNUM™ 2642 MED ABS Resins are considered general purpose. Both have been tested for biocompatiblity.
“The medical industry constantly faces equipment design challenges,” said Martin Lindway, Business Manager, PCCB Plastics Americas. “Styron is committed to providing materials that meet the complexity of applications should they be for ignition or chemical resistance, durability or aesthetics. Our portfolio offers a broad range of materials enabling customers to select appropriate resins for specific components of applications. It allows us to provide the right solution -- in other words, materials that allow premier functionality, differentiation, system cost reduction and end-user satisfaction.”
Styron supports the industry with its EMERGE™ Advanced Resins and MAGNUM™ ABS Resins for disposables and equipment housings and its CALIBRE™ Polycarbonate Resins for single- and multiple-use devices. The company’s flagship product – radiation-stabilized CALIBRE™ MEGARAD™ Polycarbonate Resins – has remained a leading choice for single-use devices for over two decades.
Styron resins are available directly through the company or through distribution partners PolyOne Distribution, Entec, and Channel Prime Alliance. The company targets customers that prefer personalized and strategic support to help them differentiate their products while remaining focused on the compliancy requirements that are so important in this industry.
At the MD&M West show, Styron will be located at Booth #1272 in the Anaheim Convention Center.
