The expanded version of DMsuite directly supports the new Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) requirements recently announced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The stricter regulations extend many of the privacy requirements to business associates of entities that receive protected health information, such as contractors and subcontractors. According to the DHHS, several of the largest breaches to-date have involved third parties. Penalties are dramatically increased for noncompliance based on the level of negligence, with a maximum penalty of $1.5 million per violation. Also impacted by these changes are the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Breach Notification requirements. Organizations must clarify exactly when breaches of unsecured health information took place to DHHS.
