SPARTANBURG, S.C.--()--Spartanburg Methodist College has been named to The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Honor Roll initiative is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the strategic commitment to engage millions of college students in service and celebrate the critical role of higher education in strengthening communities.

The award recognizes higher education institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities. The 2013 award represents the third consecutive year that Spartanburg Methodist College has been recognized by CNCS.
“We are proud of our students and their dedication to community service,” said Coleen Keith, President of Spartanburg Methodist College. “SMC students continue to inspire us all by rolling up their sleeves and working alongside members of the Spartanburg community to improve the quality of life in our community, particularly low income individuals and their families. Together, we’re showing the world that we can make a difference.”
CNCS recognized Spartanburg Methodist College for community service activities conducted during the twelve-month period ending June 30, 2012. SMC partnered with several local community agencies, providing child and family care, animal care, geriatric care, health care, homeless outreach and environmental needs. Over 500 SMC freshmen participated, with 50 upper classmen serving as team leaders and 55 staff and faculty accompanying the student volunteers. Over twelve thousand service hours were recorded for the year, serving over 8,000 individuals within the Spartanburg community.
Nationally, Honor Roll awardees engaged 3.1 million students in community service for a total of 118 million service hours contributing 2.5 billion dollars in value to communities across the country.
