NTT Electronics and Broadcom Collaborate on Low-Power, High-Performance Coherent Digital Signal Processor

Advanced Process CMOS Integrated Circuit Will Enable Smaller 100G-and-Beyond Coherent Modules and Line Cards

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NTT Electronics (NEL), a leading supplier of 100G coherent Digital Signal Processor (DSP) solutions to a variety of system/module manufacturers worldwide, and Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced a joint collaboration to deliver a low-power digital signal processor (DSP). The DSP will be used in next-generation 100G-and-beyond optical fiber communication systems.

The current generation 100G DSP will be further enhanced by the new device with the addition of features such as an integrated digital-to-analog converter (DAC/Tx), multiple modes of operation and lower power operation. These features are intended to ease bandwidth shortages in long-haul core and metropolitan networks caused by increasing traffic and data demands.

The next generation DSP will use an advanced CMOS process technology that reduces power consumption by more than 50 percent¹. The next generation DSP will utilize flexible modes of operation to provide sub-20W power consumption for operation in long-haul applications, while further reducing power consumption for metro applications. The lower power dissipation will allow use of this smarter DSP within smaller second generation coherent 100G modules, including a family of C form-factor pluggable (CFP) modules.
