NEW YORK--(EON:Enhanced Online News)--News and opinion magazine THE WEEK (www.theweekdaily.com), has selected the winners for its fifth annual Opinion Awards in the categories of Columnist of the Year, Editorial Cartoonist of the Year and Blogger of the Year.
“THE WEEK seeks to bring its readers the best, most intriguing, insightful, and thought-provoking perspectives we can find”
Washington Post op-ed Columnist Ruth Marcus has been selected as Columnist of the Year, with the judges noting her wide range of topics and unique ability to make complex issues accessible, and even entertaining. Marcus began writing for the Post while still in law school, and formally joined the paper after working for several firms post-graduation.
For the second consecutive year, Editorial Cartoonist of the Year went to Mike Luckovich of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has worked for the paper since 1989 and is syndicated nationally to more than 350 daily publications. Other accolades include 2006 winner of the Reuben, the National Cartoonist Society’s top award for cartoonist of the year, and the 1995 Pulitzer Prize and 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning.
Polk-Award winning journalist and founder of Talking Points Memo (www.talkingpointsmemo.com) Josh Marshall has been chosen as Blogger of the Year. Through his team’s original reporting, imaginative analysis, and creative approach to research, Talking Points Memo played a leading role in the revelations about the firing of nine U.S. attorneys by the Justice Department. The site averages 400,000 page views every weekday and 750,000 unique visitors every month.
“THE WEEK seeks to bring its readers the best, most intriguing, insightful, and thought-provoking perspectives we can find” said Steven Kotok, general manager of THE WEEK. “And this year’s winners are the best of the best, consistently producing original and challenging commentary.”
The winners were honored at the Opinion Awards dinner hosted by THE WEEK in association with the Aspen Institute on April 8 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, DC. Finalists were selected by senior editors of THE WEEK, while a distinguished panel of 25 judges comprised of journalists, authors, executives, and academics determined the winners.
THE WEEK Opinion Awards were launched in 2004 to recognize the nation’s best opinion writing. Last year’s winners were Nicholas D. Kristof of The New York Times, Luckovich, and Ed Morrissey of Captainsquartersblog.com.
