SVM Honored as Environmental Innovator at Silicon Valley Energy Summit
Silicon Valley Industry and Policy Experts Discuss Energy Leadership and Celebrate Local Energy Innovators
STANFORD, Calif.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Silicon Valley Microelectronics (SVM) has been awarded an Energy Innovator Award by Silicon Valley Power (SVP). The award was presented to SVM’s President, Patrick Callinan by Santa Clara Mayor Patricia Mahan at the Silicon Valley Energy Summit held at Stanford University. The Summit, co-sponsored by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group and Stanford’s Precourt Energy Efficiency Center, hosted keynote speaker Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
“We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts and hope to encourage other small businesses to focus on energy conservation”
“We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts and hope to encourage other small businesses to focus on energy conservation,” said Mr. Callinan. “SVM wants to show that regardless of the size of your business, or budget, even small changes can make a big difference when it comes to reducing energy consumption.”
SVM was selected by an independent panel of judges who reviewed companies based on energy efficiency and utilization of renewable energy. Most notably, SVM installed a 50 kW Solar system at its facility. The system has produced over 105,000 kWh of energy, meeting approximately 57% of SVM’s monthly energy needs.
In addition, SVM has taken measures large and small to reduce the company’s environmental impact:
- Removed a third of office light bulbs in their office and warehouse, reducing annual energy consumption by over 20,000 kWh, and saving $1,500 dollars in energy costs per year
- Converted 70% of local deliveries from a Ford 150 Van to a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle
- Upgraded to energy efficient air conditioning
- Converted the most desirable parking stalls to Hybrid/Carpool Parking.
- Upgraded all employees from desktop computers to energy efficient laptops
- Replaced the common area water cooler with a bottle-less filtration water cooler
- Installed sheer window blinds on all exterior windows, increasing insulation and reducing air conditioner and heater usage
- Introduced an on-site carbon neutral laundry/dry cleaning service for employees
SVM also founded a new wholly owned subsidiary in January of 2008, Vista Solar, which specializes in solar electric installation in the Greater Bay Area.
