M*Modal Wins Award for Most Innovative Healthcare IT Technology

Transformational Solution Accelerates Adoption of Electronic Health Records

PITTSBURGH (Business Wire EON) May 13, 2008 -- The pioneer of the most advanced speech understanding solution in healthcare information technology was heralded for its transformational IT by a leading industry organization.

and transfers it automatically into accessible, electronic medical records. This is nothing short of amazing.
Pittsburgh-based M*Modal received the ABBY Award from the Adaptive Business Leaders Organization (ABL) which recognized AnyModalTM CDS (Conversational Documentation Services) as the years best Innovations in Healthcare Information Technology. AnyModal CDS provides a unique way to capture physician dictation and transform it automatically into meaningful clinical documentation. The companys solution helps accelerate the adoption of the electronic health record (EHR) by cost effectively bridging the gap between free-form dictation and structured data entry.

News Image The Healthcare CEO judges in the audience confirmed that M*Modal was the most transformational new healthcare IT theyd seen this year following a search that spanned the country, noted ABLs President, Mimi Grant, following the Awards ceremony. The companys technology understands the context of words recorded in dictation, captures their medical meaning and transfers it automatically into accessible, electronic medical records. This is nothing short of amazing. Grant added: And whats particularly impressive is that Michael Finke, the founder and CEO of M*Modal, has a technology background, proving once again that the biggest breakthroughs to healthcares toughest problems frequently come from innovators outside the industry. The awards ceremony was held in Costa Mesa, CA on April 23.

Acquisition of data directly from clinicians remains one of the largest obstacles to EHR adoption and information sharing. Low EHR utilization by physicians is caused in part by the difficulty of capturing data in structured form without changing their normal routine. The AnyModal CDS solution delivers higher quality, structured clinical documents directly from physician dictation within the existing workflow. This technology is a fast, easy way to document clinical notes, making physicians more efficient and reducing associated costs substantially at every step of documentation process.

M*Modals speech understanding technology has been fully embraced since its introduction. AnyModal CDS is now incorporated into the information delivery systems of numerous partners including leading players within the dictation, transcription, PACS/RIS and EHR industry such as GE Healthcare, Transcend, Spheris, PreCyse, CBay, SPI, Heartland Information Services and Transolutions, among others. One example of how this solution is being used can be seen through GE Healthcares integration of speech understanding to make structured and encoded data an integral part of the radiology workflow. "With M*Modal's advanced speech understanding capability embedded in GE Healthcare's Radiology Information System, Centricity RIS-IC, we have a winning combination for both companies - but most of all, for physicians and their patients," said Don Woodlock, Vice President and General Manager, GE Healthcare IT.

Mr. Finke, CEO of M*Modal added, Our philosophy has always been to provide solutions that are adaptive to any system, inclusive of our partners and synergistic with the goals of the EHR. We like to think that it was not just our company that won an honor, but that the entire healthcare system will gain from our technologys recognition, he concluded.

To drive the value of structured data based on narrative, M*Modal became a founding member of the Clinical Document Architecture for Clinical Document Types (CDA 4 CDT) initiative, which supports standardization for medical information exchange, and will establish standard ways of identifying and organizing discrete clinical data. This enables physicians and other clinicians to quickly and easily locate and retrieve clinical information inside electronic patient records. Explains Mr. Finke: Our companys goals and those of the CDA4CDT effort are perfectly aligned. The realty is that if a medical report is pure-text, its meaningless in terms of usability within the EHR. Without standardization, information cannot be shared. Together, healthcare providers become more efficient and patient care is improved paying off the ultimate EHR vision.

Documents generated with AnyModal CDS are in a semantically interoperable HL7 CDA format to allow for streamlined report sharing among practitioners, facilities, and systems. Its ease of deployment enables small institutions, as well as large hospitals, to gain the benefits of increased productivity and control through more accurate, more timely, and more-complete documents.
