D.O.P.E. (Death or Prison Eventually) Premieres to
Inmates at Calipatria State Prison, California, the Walls Unit, Texas

“You had to commit a felony to see the
premiere,” said 1977 World Skateboarding
Champion Dennis Martinez concerning documentary, D.O.P.E. (Death
Or Prison Eventually). D.O.P.E. features Martinez and
lifelong friends and legendary skateboarders from the 70s, 80s and 90s -
BRUCE LOGAN, JAY ADAMS and CHRISTIAN HOSOI. Famed actor, DANNY
TREJO, narrates.
Combining never before seen pristine archival footage with current HD
interviews and reenactments, D.O.P.E. moves through three decades
of skateboarding, violence and drug history: the 70s, 80s and 90s.
“It is a compelling film that has a broad
range of appeal. The prisoners were moved to tears during the screening
on more than one occasion,” states Brian
Stewart, Producer. “Recreational use of drugs
often leads to disastrous consequences.”
Rising quickly through the pro ranks, each of D.O.P.E.’s
stars earned money and fame. “I was still in
high school and paid cash for a new car and full year’s
rent on an apartment,” said Martinez. The
aforementioned skateboarders each earned up to $250,000 a year, while
still in their teens.
While each rose slowly through discipline and hard work, they fell
quickly to drug addiction. With Logan and Hosoi, it was cocaine and
methamphetamine. Adams fell to heroin, Martinez shot cocaine and
methamphetamine for 16 years. Logan and Martinez became homeless while
Adams and Hosoi landed in prison.
Focusing primarily on Martinez, the movie tracks his brief years of
stardom followed by over a decade and a half of drug abuse, armed
robbery and Russian roulette, until he began losing friends, including a
19-year-old who shot and killed himself while playing the deadly game.
The turning point came in 1996 when he sought refuge in church after
thinking he had committed murder. Each of the other D.O.P.E.
stars took similar arcs, until today they are all clean and sober. Logan
is trying to establish the once-popular skateboard company, Logan
Earth Ski. Adams is serving the final year of a three-year sentence
for a drug related crime. Hosoi still skates and lives in Orange County.
Martinez runs a rehabilitation facility and works as a volunteer prison
chaplain. Prisoners serving up to 11 life sentences are recorded for the
movie, revealing the damage drugs did to their lives.
Boat Angel/Car Angel non-profit organization produces numerous children’s
projects to help raise low self-esteem and combat hopelessness. The
Adventures of Donkey Ollie are currently aired on five national and
international satellite networks and Shipwrecked their first animated
feature film recently won Best Animated Film 2007 at the Indie Fest
shown at AMC Theatre Downtown Disneyland, and 2007 Storyteller Award
from Redemptive Film Fest screened at Regent University Virginia Beach.
